| What can I do about my teen rebel grand-daughter? This may be a bit of a long story but I would be happy if you would read ahead and give me some advice. I live with my grand-daugher. She's 17 years old. When she was 2 years old me and my husband took custody of her because her mother, which is my daughter, and her father were very neglective. They did drugs and he whole nine yards. We are from the Philippines. We lived in Japan and now we live in the states. She was such a sweet guy, sometimes bad but nowhere in what she is now.So when she became a teen she started changing quite a bit. Around the age of 13, she became more to herself, I caught her sipping some beer in the middle of the night, I even saw some pics on her cell of some inappropriate pics of some guys I dont even know. She thought I didnt know about it. At 15, she was being this thing called "emo", I never understood what that meant but I knew it was maybe a bad influence.She began smoking, majorly! I found cigarettes under her bed and a pack of beer. I asked her about it and she just starts yelling at me and her grandfather to get out of her business and her life. At that time she started locking her door. She cuts herself. It became worse and worse. She always snuck out, doing drugs, doing things without our permission, lying, you name it. I couldnt take it anymore so I took her to get some psyciatric help, it worked for a while but afterwards she started doing it again. So when she was 16, she stopped smoking which is good. She barely talked to us, like when she gets home from school she just says "hi" then walks to her room and stays in for the rest of the day. It's like she hates us. I heard her say things like "I hate the world, I hate weddings but funerals are awesome, love sucks, Id rather die than live in this sh***y world, sex is for mindless MORTALS. Its all just scary. Now for her being at 17, shes the same. But now shes more gothic and more isolated, like shes not here anymore. I just dont know what to do anymore. I want my old-granddaugher back. Any advice? | I went through the same thing as a teen. My mom was also a drug addict that had nothing to do with me from 5-17. I did drugs, drank, smoked, gave myself tattoos and piercings, stole, got in fights, went to juvy all the time, ect. It took me getting pregnant at 16 and having my son and getting married a month after I turned 17 to change. My dad tried all sorts of treatment and counselors. Nothing worked until I saw that I had a problem. She is prob feeling hurt by her parents or feel like you keep her from her parents. My only advice is to be there for her and let her know you love her and whatever you do don't pass judgment because she will just withdraw even more. Good Luck. |

Nothing like Twilight, or the Clique, or Luxe or any of THOSE things... they're all cliched, stupid, predictable, poorly written romance/drama (in my humble opinion) I like things like Pride and Prejudice (I'm reading that now), Les Miserables, sort of like classic-y books, but I'm at that stage where I'm tired of reading the guys books, and the adult books are all trashy romance or murder mysteries and sex, too. I like some "modern classics" like Harry Potter, too. Maybe something gothic (no recent vampire books because since the twilight surge they're mostly crap), or any other good classics? | Why Do You PARENTS Think Your Teens Are ANGELS When............? Why are so many parents (not all) today so bias when it comes to their guys?...Parents these days seem to generally be out of the loop & completely clueless & blinded when it comes to their teenagers. It's like if their teen says "Mom, I'm going out with my friends tonight, we are gonna see a movie" OR "I'm going to Stacey's place to hang out"......then the guy comes home at 2:00am & the parent REALLY thinks that "a movie" or "hanging out" was all their precious lil angel was doing..............Also, plenty of times parents don't even question their guys about what KIND of movie they are going to see. Some of these rated 'R' films should just be called 'Sex Tapes' to be honest...It is disgusting that so many parents (I repeat, not all) don't even care about the pollution & filth corrupting their guys' minds. I see teens standing outside the mall/in the mall parking lots smoking cigarettes & sometimes weed (in the alley), making out, the guys are dressed like gothic freaks, have holes in their faces, blue hair, they have random chains falling off of them, the girls are dressed in full-on hoochie attire, etc.....& it just makes you wonder....where the heck are their parents?!? Last time I checked school was for learning, not for destroying yourself & acting like wild un-tamed beasts. Okay I get that parents would like to see the good in their guys all of the time but that is NOT reality. We live in a totally different world & this generation is completely different than the previous ones. Ok so to make a long story short today my dad asked me to go buy books with him (he's 62 and I'm 15) and I said ok sure and then we were out and he said he wanted to talk to me. So I was like ok and he was telling me how I need a girlfriend and how I should hang out with guys too not just girls (I'm a gay teen but he doesn't know. I'm completely closeted. And I'm masculine and all that I just don't like hanging out with homophobic guys). Anyway he was telling me all this stuff and I don't think he thinks I'm gay, he's very conservative and all that. And this is the 2nd or 3rd time we had this talk. And what do I tell him? I told him I want to wait till I'm older to date girls (TOTAL Bullsh*t) but he was like you can still have a non sexual relationship and all that. And then this is when he scared me. He is like "Don't worry at your age about sexuality" and my ehart sunk I was like WTF. And then I noticed he didn't mean sexuality as we all know it but as in sex in general. But all this stuff I hate talking to him about. It's so embarrasing and the only reason he tells me these things is cause his dad never talked to him about girls and he lost faith in my gothic brother so he keep telling me "I have a lot of faith in you that you will marry a beautiful woman one day. You are my good proud son" and all this stuff kills me cause I know he will kill me if he finds out I'm gay. I heard him talk about gays and its all a bunch of stereotypical bullsh*t. he told me he's like "Never mix with gays because they will try to confuse you and get into your life" and all this stuff which is horrible and I can't stand listening. First fo all I did like to tell you that stop assuming yourself as a gay as in teens everyone is gay or lesbian but only few come out as real homosexuals in later lives.As you dad said 'Don't worry at your age about sexuality' is truly a truth as in teens everyone goes through a phase. Secondly if you are damn sure that 'yes,I am a gay' then there's no harm in having a girl as friend honey,don't ever be in a sexual way with her,just keep that as a plain friendship..nothing else.Like me,I am a gay and I have many friends who are girls,btw,a gay guy has a lot friends (girl) as they mix very easily with them...so,if you are a real gay guy then you must have one or two female friends too honey.Or else find a good lesbian girl and be friend with her so there will be no chances of you two to be in a sexual relationship and in that way,you can keep your dad quite and calm and also to prevent him from further talks which you don't like!! | Content Concerns in Story? Okay, I'm editor for a Gothic magazine that's aimed for anyone 13 and up. Recently we received a piece that I'd like to see published, but one of the other editors has concerns that the content would send the wrong message. In the story, the MC mentions that she's been raped and that despite fighting against it, she actually wanted it because it was her first feel of a man. It's not even a rape scene, but just a mention that she was raped, so there's no explicit detail. The other editor feels that this will send a harmful message to both males and females that females always want sex, rape included. This has me skeptical now. Since this is geared for individuals aged 13 and up, I'm assuming our teen readers are reading YA and/or adult novels now. In my opinion, I don't think I should have to request that the writer change the scene, because I've never believed that it's a writer's responsibility to deliver messages and morals to guys: just a story that reflects reality. Obviously you wouldn't mention rape in a middle grade book or a chapter book, but this is a magazine for teenagers and up. Most girls don't want rape, but some girls are twisted enough to think what the MC of this story thinks. What should I do? Should I persuade the other editor the content should stay, or should I request that the writer change the content? |
| I think you should try and keep it in there. I'm one of those people that was allowed to read more adult books from a pretty young age, and I always found those sorts of perspectives more interesting. The point isn't to give morals, the point is to tell an interesting story. As long as there's no really dirty details, one twisted opinion isn't all that objectionable. When I was younger I always detested the idea that certain things were "too mature" for me, like I couldn't handle heavier content without going out and robbing a convenience store or getting pregnant or something. I appreciated reading some more intense things because I thought it was fascinating to read about how traumatic situations changed the way people thought. So basically the point of that rant was, yes, I think you should try and keep it in there. I hope you can decide on what to do, good luck. (: Oh, and you could also add a little disclaimer, you know, like an explicit label for music only, for a story. |
